Nat’l highway users should pay tolls: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked the relevant ministry about taking measures for tool collection from long-distance vehicles that ply on four national highways. The money will be used for the maintenance of the roads.
The PM gave the directive while approving a project title “Establishment of Axle Load Control Centres at Entry Points of Goods Transport on the Important Highways” at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) at the NEC conference room in the capital’s Agargaon area on Tuesday.
Planning Minister MA Mannan briefed the media after the meeting.
“You should start thinking about collecting toll (from vehicles using national highways),” Mannan quoted the Prime Minister as saying.
The PM talked about imposing toll not only for using bridges, but also for using the national highways like Dhaka-Chattogram, Dhaka-Rangpur, Dhaka-Sylhet and Dhaka-Khulna, he added.
The toll money can be used for the maintenance of the highways, Manna quoted her as saying.
The ECNEC approved 10 projects involving Tk 6,326 crore, including Tk 1,630 crore to be set up axle load control centres on important highways.
It also approved a Tk 174 crore project to establish centres to test the purity of water all over the country, which will be implemented from July 2019 to June 2022.
Another project worth Tk 793 crore was also passed for the maintenance of the Dhaka-Chattogram four-lane highway.
