Curbing pollution

DNCC, DSCC should be more careful: HC

Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Wednesday asked the authorities of the two City Corporations of Dhaka city to be more careful in curbing pollution and mosquito menace.
It also expressed dissatisfaction to the two City Corporations for not taking effective steps in this regard and ordered them to take steps to this end.
The High Court also sought a report on effective steps taken to curb pollution and pre-monsoon mosquito control by June 16.
The bench of Justice F R M Nazmul Ahasan and Justice K M Kamrul Kader passed the observation and order while hearing a rule issued earlier by this court for preventing pollution in Dhaka city.
During the hearing, Chief Executive Officers (CEO) of Dhaka South City Corporation Mustafizur Rahman and Dhaka North City Corporation Md Abdul Hye appeared before the court.
They submitted two separate reports to the HC on the steps to prevent air pollution in the city.
The court said, their reports are ambiguous and dissatisfactory and ordered them to submit reports again specifying the measures they have taken to this effect in details to this court by June 16.
On May 5, 2019, the High Court summoned the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of the city’s two City Corporations to explain about their report on air pollution in Dhaka city submitted in the court.
The HC bench passed the order after hearing a petition filed by a rights organization, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB).
Advocate Manzill Murshid appeared in the court on behalf of the writ petition, while Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar stood for the State. Advocate Nurunnahar Akter Nupur represented the two City Corporations.
Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar said, “Upon a writ petition filed by HRPB, the HC on January 28, 2019, directed the two City Corporations to scatter water in the dust-prone areas of the capital city twice everyday so that the dust could not harm us. The court would not be happy with their routine work mentioned in the report submitted in the court. So, the court summoned the two CEOs in the court on May 15 to explain their position.”
