Subarnachar rape accused Ruhul gets HC bail

The High Court (HC) on Monday granted anticipatory bail for one year to Ruhul Amin, the main accused of gang-rape to a mother of four in Noakhali’s Subarnachar area for voting “sheaf of paddy” in the 11th general elections.
Ruhul Amin was the Publicity Affairs Secretary of Subarnachar Awami League. He was expelled from the party after being accused of rape. He was the former member of Char Jubilee Union Parishad.
The HC bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice S M Kuddus Zaman passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by Ruhul.
A mother of four was gang-raped in Noakhali’s Subarnachar on December 31, 2018, allegedly by 10 to 12 Awami League activists. The 35-year-old woman claimed that she was raped for voting for “sheaf of paddy”, the electoral symbol of the BNP, during December 30 national polls. The rape incident sparked widespread criticism across the country.
Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Biswajit Roy said, they had filed appeal petition against the High Court bail order. The appeal may be heard on March 25 in the Chamber Judge Court, Biswajit added.
The DAG said, “We think, the counselor of the accused misguided the court. In the bail application they mentioned the name of another court. So, the copy of the bail application was sent to that mentioned court.”
The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks as to why the bail period of Ruhul Amin should not be extended.
Police arrested 10, including Ruhul Amin, in that case.
