Two bodies were formed on Monday to investigate the launch capsize in the Padma River near Mawa Ghat in Lauhajang upazila in Munshiganj district.
The Ministry of Shipping formed a seven-member probe committee headed by its joint secretary Nurur Rahman.
Representatives from Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), Mercantile Marine Department and deputy commissioners of Munshiganj and Madaripur districts are the
other members of the committee. Meanwhile, Mercantile Marine Department formed a four-member committee with Engineer and Ship Surveyor Najmul Haq as its head.
The two committees were asked to submit their reports over the launch accident within the next 10 working days. Two people died while many others remained missing after a launch with 250 passengers on board sank in the Padma River.
The accident took place at about 11:15 am when the overloaded launch, Pinak-6, from Kawrakandi capsized in the river, 800 yards off Mawa Ghat (jetty) at 11:15 am due to strong current while it was heading towards the jetty.
