AT least 255 people have so far been killed in the countrywide ongoing anti-drug drives in the last five months but different types of drugs are still available at higher rates. Without stimulating social awareness against drugs among youth generations and failure to stop drug peddling due to political influence, section of law enforcers’ involvement with the drug net, and loopholes in the law have made the situation critical. The killings of drug traders have not brought any quality change so far.
The law enforcement agencies’ approach to deter drug addiction is not comprehensive, hence it’s abortive. We suggest taking a comprehensive plan involving all departments concerned, sealing of borders, faith-based approach to healthcare, psychological support, creating enough employment opportunities for effective deterrence of drug addiction.
In the meantime about 40,000 suspected drug peddlers and addicts so far have been arrested. But it did not work at the desired level. Physicians, academics and health rights activists have emphasised creating awareness, especially among the youths, and ensuring friendly environment to children by engaging them in sports, games and cultural activities to check drug abuses.
As per law enforcers, the most dangerous drug Yaba is smuggled into the country from Myanmar but the border security force hardly nab drug consignments, smugglers or take any action to suspend drug manufacturing industries. An MP accused of drug business in Cox’s Bazar escaped the law enforcers.
Drug taking scenes in drama and cinema should be censored. We have to create awareness beginning with the family. It is the duty of all to save our children from being ruined. Why do not the law enforcement agencies apply full force to resist drugs at the border? Comprehensive programmes involving all should be the prime focus to eliminate drugs. Unnecessary killings of petty drug peddlers won’t bring any good.
