Read the Quran, be righteous
The Holy Ramzan bears a special and unique position in the Islamic calendar because the Holy Quran, ‘the guide to mankind’ was revealed in this month. The first revealed word of the Quran is ‘Iqra’ meaning ‘Read’.
This Commandment, unique in the history of Heavenly Scriptures, lays greatest importance on reading at the very beginning which signifies literacy, study and research. So Muslims must be literate. They should also be learned. Al-Quran, being the code of life and ‘guidance’, they should recite and try to understand its verses regularly.
The Holy Quran reveals : “And this is a Book /Which we have revealed/As a blessing ; so follow it /And be righteous, that ye/May receive mercy.” (Sura Anam 6 : 155)
“When The Quran is read,/Listen to it with attention/ And hold your peace :/That ye may receive mercy.” (Sura A’raf 7: 204)
Tilawat (recitation from the Holy Quran) is a great virtue. It is more virtuous in the month of Ramzan. The Messenger of Allah used to recite Quran more and more in this month in comparison with other months. He said, “Whoever recites an Ayat (verse) from the Holy Quran (in Ramzan) will receive a similar reward as the one who recites the whole Quran in other months.” (Bukhari Sharif)
He said, “Invoke your Lord in right earnest with hearts that are free of sin and evil, to enable you to fast and to recite His book (Al Quran).” (Prophet’s Sermon, Uyun Akhbar al Ridha)
Muslims are mostly illiterate and ignorant. The ignorant can not make difference between right and wrong, just and unjust. Thus the majority illiterate Muslim community is an easy victim of aggression, injustice and oppression. This is, in fact, the present tragic scenario. So literacy based on Quranic knowledge is a must for Muslims. Reading the Holy Quran and carrying research thereto should also be taken as a must as this will surely open an era of struggle in the light of Quran which will lead them to the goal of getting rid of the present crisis.
Though recitation of the verses of the Quran is of great merit and virtue, it will be more virtuous and beneficial if we try to understand the meaning and significance of the verses. We should recite Holy Quran, and also try to go deep into the Message of Allah.
The Muslims should not forget that The Quran, the Divine Scripture of universal ideals revolutionised the fate of humanity, ensured human brotherhood, justice, equality and prosperity, and greatly contributed to the march of civilisation.
