Small coconut tree farming brings solvency to Rangamati farmers

A Correspondent :
Small coconut tree farming has made local farmers hopeful about achieving financial solvency.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in the district has started to plant saplings of the coconut variety on the hills surrounded by the Kaptai Lake.
The DAE is hopeful about bringing revolution to the local agriculture sector by cultivating this variety of coconut tree instead of cultivating regular size ones. In the first phase, the DAE is planting 2,000 saplings of the coconut trees.
The DAE is implementing the ‘Nutritional development through fruit production round the year’ project, and in this connection, they are planting the saplings on the fallow lands of the small hills.
The DAE has become hopeful after getting some green coconuts from several trees which were planted at the house of former state minister Moni Swapon Dewan at Hazaribag near Rangamati town. Getting this output, they are hopeful about some bigger prospect.
Consultant of Chittagong Hills Tracts Horticulture Centre Agriculturist SM Qamruzzaman said, “The hilly slopes surrounded by the Kaptai Lake are suitable for producing this coconut variety which has origin in Vietnam. There are two varieties- Siam Green Coconut and Siam Blue Coconut. We get 50 to 60 green coconuts from a local variety tree in seven to eight years of plantation, we get more green coconuts from these two varieties within three years of plantation. The trees are of little height, and it is easy to collect the fruits standing on the ground. After a tree starts giving fruit, around 200 to 250 of the fruits can be obtained from the tree in 20 years.”
He further said, “The cultivation method of the varieties is also easy. Especially it will be easy to ensure irrigation by cultivating the coconut on hilly slopes surrounded by the Kaptai Lake. Besides, the locally-produced organic fertiliser will also boost the production. By applying pesticides in time, it will be easy to get maximum output.”
In this connection, Deputy Project Director of the ‘Nutritional development through fruit production round the year’ project Agriculturist Nurul Islam said, “The huge possibility of the small-sized coconut variety has ushered in new hope among the local agriculturists and farmers.
