Police must stop rapists, abductors and killers
THE gang-rape of a law student and her subsequent killing in an inter-district bus on Tangail-Mymensingh highway on Friday night by about half dozen transport workers once again showed the extend of break down of the country’s law and order situation. We are totally shocked by the barbarity of the perpetrators for their dastardly act and demand arrest of all criminals immediately and put them on trial. They must get the highest punishment to send the message to such other criminals that they have no way to survive. We are so ashamed that a female was so mutilated on way to her home on Eid holidays; such lawlessness is not at all acceptable.
It is with public money that a huge police force is maintained, yet security or protection of law is no hindrance from daring criminals. We cannot help but think criminals are taking advantage of police apathy to catch them for their connection to crimes.
A law student has been raped to mean that the entire legal system is being violated as things are unfolding now in the country. People are utterly helpless in the streets and the country is at the mercy of criminal gangs.
Report said the ill-fated girl boarded the bus at Bogra and as night deepens all passengers got down at different places. As she was left alone a transport worker made advance on her taking her at the backside of the bus. She begged her safety handing over Tk 5,000 she was carrying, besides giving her mobile phone. The man took away her belongings but did not spare her. She raped her to be joined by four others in a free country where people are so unlucky. Later they killed her in the running bus and threw away her body at some place on roadside of Tangail-Mymensingh Highway. Police recovered the body later on information by some other people and so far arrested five staffers. Two more are on the run.
The incident once again points to the shocking reality of the vulnerability of women even in public transportation systems in the highway. Reports galore on such rapes and killing of young women at homes and highways and it appear such crimes are only on the surge. Its not coming down to only suggest the utter failure of our law enforcers. Crime control has to be accepted as the challenge of the police. To keep the political bosses happy is not policing.
We are proving unfit to rein in anarchy and it is a shame for all of us.
