Mr Macron`s victory comes as a defeat for Eurosceptics

DESPITE attempts by Marine Le Pen to project herself from far-right to a center-right candidate at the last moment and the attempts by the Russian hacker group which infiltrated the US Democratic election to do the same in France’s election have failed to sabotage the election. Emmanuel Macron won the French election on the second round with two-thirds majority to bring the sigh of relief to European leadership. He defeated the Eurosceptics and their dream to roll back France within the border. Almost thirty million voters cast their votes for Macron in this fateful French election.

No one had imagined he would win by such a resounding margin as he managed to gather barely a quarter of the votes cast in the first round. At that time – barely two weeks ago, it seemed that Le Pen had a fighting chance as she managed to gather almost 22 percent of the total votes cast. So how did Macron end up winning is a big question and no doubt it has its root to the fact that French voters had supported him as a new generation leader for his liberal values and pro-European stance that he does not want to isolate France like Brexit folding away Britain from European common market and the continental politics.

Voters trusted him as a reliable leader who can preserve “France’s image abroad.” He is moreover honest unlike the traditional leadership of the center right and center left parties who have just disappeared in new political development. French people were also impressed by his new ideas how to build France again by rebuilding the economy and unite the divided nation. His business-friendly vision of European integration, defeating Marine Le Pen ultra-nationalism that threatened to take France out of the European Union finally saved 27-nation Union from the treat of gradual dissolution of the future European Confederation.

The centrist’s emphatic victory has in fact stopped the rise of the forces bent upon destroying European unity. The populist upheaval that came one after another after election of Donald Trump in US Presidency and the victory of pro-Brexit force in Britain in June last year seems to have got the biggest defeat with the victory of pro-Europran Macron in French election. Earlier voters in the Netherlands rejected the Eurosceptics in large majority two months ago and Macron’s victory this time sends the message to German and Italian ultra-nationalists before election in both countries later this year that the strength of unity is far greater than isolationist policies. Europe can live better through economic integration expansion of its common market.
