Youth allegedly picked up by RAB on false charges

Our Correspondent :
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has allegedly picked up a young man following altercations with some of RAB members in Shariatpur.
The family of the youth, Shamim Sikdar, came up with the allegation on Friday.
RAB, however, said that Shamim Sikdar was picked up as he was in possession of Yaba and forged currency notes.
RAB-8 deputy assistant director Shahidul Islam on Friday filed charges against Shamim with the Palong Model Police Station in Shariatpur, accusing him of possessing of forged currency notes and Yaba, as well as obstructing official duty.
Shamim, the son of Khaleque Sikdar of Tulsha, Shariatpur, has been living in Spain for the past 15 years. He returned to the country on 6 December.
According to eye-witness accounts, the local youth got into an altercation with plainclothes members of RAB on Thursday when a motorbike hit an ‘easy-bike’ in front of the civil surgeon’s office in Shariatpur town.
Following this incident, around 10 persons identifying themselves as RAB members, escorted Shamim at Rajganj bridge area, beat him up and took him away. Later a press note was issued by the Madaripur RAB camp said that Shamim was caught for possessing of Yaba and false currency notes.
Shariatpur judge court assistant public prosecutor Parvez Rahman, an eye witness of the incident, said that three persons had been riding on a motorbike around four in the afternoon on Thursday.
The driver was talking on the mobile phone and the motorbike hit the ‘easy-bike’. Parvez Rahman said, “We protested and so did Shamim, who was present at the spot.
Later at eight in the night I heard that RAB members had picked up Shamim. I rushed to the police station and even contacted the RAB camp. Till ten at night there was no news of Shamim. I filed a general diary (GD) at the Palong police station.”
Shamim’s mother Saleha Begum said, “My son has been living in Spain for the past 15 years. RAB members have needlessly tortured him and pressed false charges against him. I want justice.”
Shamim spoke at the police station Friday morning, saying, “I came back from Spain on 6 December. I was to go back after two months. I have been caught and beaten up because of an argument with RAB. I was blindfolded at night and tortured mercilessly at the RAB camp. Now I’m being falsely accused of possessing Yaba and counterfeit currency notes.”
RAB-8 Madaripur camp director Major Sohail Rana said, “Shamim was on drugs and attacked RAB members who were on duty. He was found with 100 Yaba tablets and 10 thousand taka in false notes in his pockets. He was not tortured in any way.”
