The Nanupur Laila-Kabir Degree College has celebrated its silver jubilee with dignitaries who joined the event saying in the past two and half decades it earned the repute of being a model educational institution in greater Chittagong.
“This college has appeared as one of the model colleges of Chittagong,” state minister for land Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Zabed told the celebrations on the college premises at Fatikchhari on the outskirts of the port city on Sunday.
He recalled the initiative of former Awami League lawmaker late Rafiqul Anwar in establishing the college and his family’s contributions in turning it as a model institution in the subsequent years.
“The family of Rafiqul Anwar manifested their big heart in establishing the college with their private initiative,” the state minister told the function chaired by president of the college governing body Fakhrul Anwar.
President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent messages congratulating the collage and expressing their hopes that it would continue to instill into the minds of its students a sense of tolerance, harmony, social commitment and patriotism alongside imparting the academic knowledge.
The two-day celebrations were marked by reception to 1971 Liberation War veterans of the region while the carnival was launched with a magnificent parade staged by the current students of the college.
The celebrations also featured by friendly football matches, cultural programmes and reminiscence by a large number of former students of the college.
Eminent journalist and writer Abed Khan, journalist Shawkat Bangali, newly elected chairman of Chittagong District Council MA Salam, joint secretary of public administration ministry Abul Kalam, general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League SM Zakir Hossain and principal of the college Sarwar Alam, among others, joined the celebrations.
