4 more in jail for 18 yrs without trial

Gulam Rabbani :
Four more prisoners have been found in jail for 18 years without any trial.
They are Chand Mia, Makbul Hossain, Sentu Kamal and Bilal Mia. All of them are now at Kashimpur jail in Gazipur district, jail sources said.
The Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee on Wednesday sent separate letters to the jail authorities across the country seeking information about those prisoners, who have been in jail for long without any trial.
In reply to the letter, the Kashimpur jail authority sent a list of 56 prisoners to the Inspector General of Prison yesterday. These four prisoners are among them. Recently the High Court granted bail to Shipon, a prisoner, who had been in the same jail for more than 16 years without any trial.
Sources said, Chand Mia is in prison since 1999 in a murder case of Shampur Police Station. This case is now under trial in a Dhaka court. Mokbul Hossain of Madaripur was arrested in another murder case in 2000. But the case filed against him is yet to end in 17 years. The case is also under trial in a Dhaka court. Nobody appeared in the court for Mokbul. Sentu Kamal of Motijheel AGB colony was arrested in 2001 in a case. He was produced in a Special Court in Dhaka last month for the last time. But the court could not complete the proceedings of the case even after 16 years.
Bilal Mia also embraced the same fate. Because the murder case filed against him at Tejgaon Police Station is yet to make any headway. He is in Kashimpur jail since 2002. The case is under trial in a Dhaka court.
It is to be noted that there are 68 jails in the country.
The legal aid committee requested for two separate lists of the prisoners. One list will be for those, who have been in the jails for more than five years and the other for more than 10 years without trial so that the legal aid committee can provide legal assistance to them. The government has taken the responsibility of giving legal assistance to the poor litigants. But it exposes from the recent media reports that many prisoners have been staying in jail for a long time without any trial. The trial proceedings of the cases against them continues for years for various reasons, including absence of witnesses in the trial courts, according to the letter.
