Sandbar raised in the body of river remains unused for agricultural purpose.
Farmers are now fighting to make these white sandbars green and green. They could have overcome this challenge with the help of a NGO named Practical Action, Bangladesh funded by EEP SHIREE (DFID-GOB) Ministry of Rural Development and Cooperatives in partnership with PNGO UNDP.
Farmers said, they have taken training from Practical Action and tried to seed pumpkin in the sandbar and become successful. Practical Action is cultivating pumpkin in different areas of northern region of Bangladesh successfully.
On Saturday , an expert team from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh visited the sandbar cropping field in Kurigram district where pumpkin is cultivated at large scale.

Solaiman Ali Fakir, Department of Crop Botany, BAU, Nazmul Islam Chowdhury, Head of PFP, Practical action, A Mannan Molla, Practical action and Dr. Md. Shahiduzzaman, Editor, Shobujbangladesh24.com have visited the pumpkin field.
Prof Mandal said, successful cultivation of pumpkin in less or non fertile sandbar is really surprising and brings the hope for the extreme poor people for their livelihood development. Utilization of non suitable land like sandbar or riverbank for cropping can make revolution in the field of agriculture in Bangladesh. Experts said our farmers can be financially and environmentally benefited through cultivation of biotech maize like 28 countries of the world. Experts also said by ensuring natural gas supply or alternative energy agro- based industries can/must be established in greater Rangpur. In addition using of sustainable agro technologies can accelerate the development of this region through agricultural development.
Experts said, for any development we need to work in coordination. If the government, non-government ogranization, businessman and other stakeholders work in coordination in Rangpur there is extreme possible to make revolution in the field of agriculture in Rangpur. Two days program has been arranged by the agriculture based online newspaper shobujbangladesh24.com for specific proposition and guideline in order to enrich the poor people of greater Rangpur through agricultural development. First day of the program a round table meeting was held at RDRS on “contribution and future activities of government and non government organization for agricultural development of Rangpur. The NGOs and government organization presented their contribution and future activities in the meeting.
