The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday arrested three high officials of the state-owned Agrani Bank, including its deputy Managing Director Mizanur Rahman Khan, only two hours after the finance ministry made him (Mizanur) the acting Managing Director of the bank.
Mizanur Rahman Khan, was made the acting Managing Director following the removal of Agrani Bank Managing Director Syed Abdul Hamid on the same day for allegedly violating rules in granting loans amounting to Tk 792 crore.
The two other arrestees are Akhtarul Alam, Deputy General Manager of the bank’s principal branch and Mohammad Shafiullah, Assistant General Manager, ACC Public Relations Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told journalists.
Pranab Kumar said a special team of anti-graft watchdog led by its deputy director Benzir Ahmed arrested Mizanur Rahman Khan, Akhtarul Alam and Mohammad Shafiullah for their alleged involvement in sanctioning loans worth Tk 108 crore illegally.
In the morning, ACC filed a case with Motijheel Police Station accusing eight persons including the three high officials over the loan scam.
The Agrani Bank officials sanctioned home loan about Tk 108 crore to Mizanur Rahman, proprietor of Sun Moon Group, according to the case document.
But, neither the plot had any valid documents nor it had any Rajuk approval, the case document shows. Moreover, a case over the land was pending before the court.
Even after that, Mizanur was granted loan and around Tk 94.8 crore was withdrawn from the account, shows the document.
Meanwhile, on Thursday morning a letter, signed by Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir, containing Syed Abdul Hamid’s removal order of the central bank, was sent to the secretary of Banking and Financial Institution Division of the Finance Ministry and the Chairman of Agrani Bank board.
He has been removed just 10 days before the expiry of his service tenure.
However, some senior officials of the bank said Abdul Hamid is a soft spoken and sober person. He might have been removed on suspicious ground, they added.
Earlier on Wednesday, Bangladesh Bank decided to remove the managing director of the state-owned bank from his post for his role in alleged loan scam.
According to official sources at Bangladesh Bank, the central bank took the decision at a high-level meeting on Wednesday.
It was alleged that violating the rules, Agrani Bank issued a huge loan in favour of a number of business houses including SunMoon Group and Tanaka Trading.
Against this backdrop, the central bank had earlier issued a show-cause notice to the Agrani Bank managing director.
The Agrani Bank chief replied to the notice, but it was not accepted by the central bank which finally took the decision to remove him.
