Doctors should submit to the judicial process

A NATIONAL daily reported that patients suffered a lot as physicians and clinic owners in Rajshahi district enforced a strike on the 28th of March demanding the release of a doctor arrested in a murder case. Physicians did not join their duties at government hospitals, including Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), while private clinics were shut in Rajshahi City.
During the strike internee doctors were seen treating patients at the RMCH. At Ward 8 of the hospital, 35-year-old patient Ashraful Islam died due to lack of treatment, complained his brother. Many patients waited for hours to see doctors, while some left the hospital fearing that there would be no treatment, according to the report. Clinic owners went on strike on Thursday evening protesting rejection of bail and sending to jail of an orthopedic surgeon, one of the owners of a clinic, by a trial court in a murder case.
The errant doctor was accused of murder by the wife of a patient who died within minutes of being on the operating table at his private clinic. While police cleared the doctor in their final report the trial court rejected it after the plaintiff filed a no confidence petition and sent the accused Doctor to jail, according to the report.
It is almost impossible for patients to fight doctors for negligence. Evidence will not be coming from fellow doctors.
But the doctors should allow the judicial proceedings for winning back confidence of the patients.
