Khagrachhari Correspondent :
A hill has been cut down illegally for making road communication towards a brickfield by an alleged brickfield owner at Battali area under Matiranga upazila of the district. Besides, the soil cut from the hill is being used in the brickfield.
But mysteriously the upazila administration is not taking action against the malpractice, local people alleged.
Abul Hashem, a local of Battali area, alleged that the brickfield owner Muhammad Zakir Hossain axed down the hill for his own purpose.
“He cut down the hill which locals used for gathering or fair. The depth of the hill cutting is around 15-16 feet, and the soil may collapse during the upcoming rainy season snapping road communication between Matiranga and Battali,” he added.
Kamrul Hasan, another villager said that they have informed the matter to Matiranga Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), both written and verbally, but he didn’t take any action.
Nur Mohammad, another villager alleged that they have lost a natural place for excursion and other social gatherings.
While talking to this correspondent, the alleged brickfield owner Mohammad Zakir Hossain said he cut down the hill as per the UNO’s direction with an aim to ensure smooth communication and to beautify Battali area for visitors. Matiranga UNO BM Moshiur Rahman, brushing aside the allegation of the locals, said that the hill was cut down just for development in communication facilities between Matiranga and Battali.
