Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development launched three publications (One Proceeding, A study Tour Report and One Research Report) on March 3, 2016 titled:
1) Proceedings of the National Level Training Workshop on Sustainable Development Goals: Land Use, Food Security and Changing Pattern of Agriculture in Bangladesh, 2) Role of ICTs in Agriculture/Rural Development and Governance in Taiwan: A Report on Study Visit, and 3) Endangered and Promising Fruit Species in the Changing Context of Climate for Nutrition Security and Livelihood in Coastal Areas of Bangladesh. Books were jointly unveiled by Salahuddin Mahmud, Director General, BARD, Comilla and Dr Khushnood Ali, Head, Research Division, AARDO, New Delhi, India.
Bangladesh has achieved an important position in the international development because of its tremendous achievement in different indicators of MDGs. This will show the ways to perform better in the initiative for Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. The published proceeding is based on the national workshop of same titled which was focus mainly on supporting policy recommendations and new development initiative on SDGs 2. The goal 2 of SDG is focused on ‘end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture’. This goal encourages a focus on sustainable agriculture and food security, which has high importance for Bangladesh. Therefore, based on five keynote papers on five relevant thematic areas, the proceedings suggested a comprehensive agriculture development framework that is coordinated and monitored by a national committee headed by the Prime Minister. It also suggested, based on stakeholder analysis, coordinated use of resources, well balanced resource distribution for all sectors, widen the social safety net horizon and diversified the social safety net initiative, recognition of women as farmer and public-private partnership for agricultural subsidies for women headed households, more funding for research and development (R&D), regional coordination for combating climate change etc. This book is edited by Dr Kamrul Ahsan, Fouzia Nasreen Sultana and Abu Taleb. They all are working as Faculty Members of BARD, Comilla.
The Second book is written by Salauddin Mahmud and Dr Kamrul Ahsan of BARD. The book is based on a study tour in Taiwan. This exposure visit to Taiwan is a learning experience for both writers. It was found that being a highly accomplished nation in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), Taiwan is using the full potential of ICTs for the improvement of agriculture and development of rural areas. They particularly mentioned their visits to different institutions like Taiwan National University, Taiwan Agriculture Research Institute, Mushroom Farm etc. who are directly working on improving the technology for agriculture. They learned how Taiwan is improving their agriculture by using remote sensing and GIS technologies. Particularly, the use of these technologies to assess soil qualities for paddy cultivation, using ICTs for soil and fertilizer management, Good Agricultural Practices (GAD) for improving vegetables and fruits cultivation and pest control etc.
The final publication is based on research conducted in 2014-2016 time period. This research was conducted by Dr Kamrul Ahsan, Dr Shishir Kumar Munshi and Md Anowar Hossain Bhuyan of BARD, Comilla. This research found an alarming situation in fruit cultivation that is endangering local fruit varieties of fruits in coastal areas of Bangladesh. It was found that increase of salinity because of sea-water intrusion in the coastal areas have direct impact on local fruit cultivation. The sea-water intrusion in the country is a direct impact of climate change. This research found that farmers are now focusing on growing diversified improved fruits which is supportive in growing in coastal areas but have high impact on local varieties due to increasing trend of salinity both in soil and water. Therefore this research suggested for coordinated efforts from the research institutions for local variety conservation, public-private partnership to encourage and provide training to the farmers for conservation of local varieties, increase capacity building of extension workers to protect local varieties from salinity, improve technology to protect fruit cultivation from salinity etc. This research was conducted with the funding from Social Science Research Council, Planning Commission, and Government of Bangladesh.
The first two is jointly published by BARD, Comilla and AARDO, New Delhi, India and the third book is published by BARD, Comilla. All three books are available at BARD, Comilla and in some designated sellers in Dhaka New Market. n
