555 edn institutes in Khagrachhari don’t have Shaheed Minar

Most of the educational institutions here do not have Shaheed Minar. As a result, thousands of students are not getting practical knowledge of the history relating to International Mother Language Day on February 21.
District Education Office and District Primary Education Office sources said there are total 664 educational institutions in the district.
Of these, 534 are government primary schools, 116 high schools and madrashas, and 14 colleges. Of those, only 75 government primary schools and 34 high schools and colleges have Shaheed Minar. While talking to this correspondent, Headmaster of Komalchharimukh Government Primary School under Sadar upazila Md Sirajul Islam said there is no Shaheed Minar at his school. “Most of the students have to walk around four kilometres to go to the Central Shaheed Minar early in the morning to participate in the Language Day celebrations,” he said, adding that students can’t learn practically in connection with the historic event.
Headmaster of Dighinala Girls’ High School in Dighinala upazila Ranjan Kumar Chakma urged the government to sanction money to set up a Shaheed Minar at his school.
Former Principal of Khagrachhari Government College Bodhisatta Dewan said it’s important to set up Shaheed Minar at each school aiming to familiarise the true history of the language movement among the students.
Acting District Primary Education Officer Md Mamun Kabir said they asked all primary schools to celebrate the International Mother Language Day as a part of the national programme.
Celebrating the day is mandatory, but it’s not mandatory to set up Shaheed Minar at the schools, he said.
District Education Officer Nirmal Kanti Chakma admitted that most of the educational institutions are running without Shaheed Minar.
“We sent an order to celebrate the day at each school, but there is no instruction to set up Shaheed Minar,” he added.
