Fakhrul pays tribute to liberation war martyrs

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir pays tribute to the martyrs of the great War of Liberation by placing wreath at the National Memorial in Savar on Saturday.

Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid tribute to the martyrs of the Great Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar on Saturday.

The President placed the wreath at 10:27am and stood in solemn silence for some time in profound respect for the martyrs.

Newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid homage to the martyrs of the Great Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar, marking one of his first major public engagements after assuming office.

After placing the wreath, the President stood silently for some time to honour those who sacrificed their lives during the Liberation War. A smartly turned-out contingent from the Bangladesh Army, Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Air Force later accorded him a guard of honour.

Fakhrul then signed the visitors’ book at the National Memorial premises, paying tribute to the martyrs and describing the memorial as an enduring symbol of national pride, sacrifice, unity and patriotism. In the visitors’ book, he wrote, “I pay my deepest respect to all the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the great Liberation War by attending the National Memorial.

In exchange for their supreme sacrifice, boundless courage and genuine patriotism, we have achieved our beloved motherland – independent and sovereign Bangladesh.”

He added, “This sacred National Memorial is an eternal monument of our national pride, sacrifice, unity and patriotism, which will forever inspire patriotism and nation-building.”

The President also commemorated Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, and Deshnetri Begum Khaleda Zia, referring to them as figures whose patriotism, leadership and struggle for democracy would remain part of the country’s national history.

Fakhrul pledged that the people would work together to build a peaceful, just, democratic, welfare-oriented and prosperous Bangladesh by upholding the spirit of the Great Liberation War, the ideals of the Constitution and the dignity of the martyrs’ sacrifice.

He concluded with a prayer for the forgiveness of the souls of the martyrs and peace, prosperity and welfare for Bangladesh.

Later, the President planted a Magnolia Grandiflora sapling, watered it and left the National Memorial premises.

Earlier, State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain received the President upon his arrival at the National Memorial.

Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Khondkar Misbah Ul Azim, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, Military Secretary to the President Major General A S M Bahauddin, Public Division Secretary AJM Salahuddin Nagari, President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam and the Savar Cantonment GOC were present.

The National Memorial in Savar serves as the country’s principal monument commemorating those who sacrificed their lives during the Great Liberation War.
