Staff Reporter :Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Wednesday termed the municipality polls across the country as tragic one saying there is not even semblance of the fairness and credibility in the elections.He also alleged that the ruling party cadres captured many polling centres and snatched ballots with the help of law enforcers to ensure their artificial victory in the polls. “Massive vote rigging, capturing of polling centres, irregularities, attack and killing of a person have turned the municipality polls into a tragic one,” he told journalists at a press briefing at the party central office at Nayapaltan in city yesterday afternoon.Mirza Fakhrul said the government has destroyed the country’s electoral system by using the Election Commission (EC) to serve its own purpose. “Election Commission’s inefficiency and loyalty to the government has destroyed the country’s election system again. The ruling party men captured many polling centres across the country,” he alleged. The BNP spokesman alleged that all state machinery have been used to hold a stage-managed election. “As we do believe in democracy as part of movement we took part in the election,” he said.BNP joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi claimed that Chhatra League cadres shot Jubo Dal leader Nurul Amin dead in Satkania Government College polling centre during the election. “A reporter and a camera person of private TV channel ATN News have been arrested so that the real picture of the election could not be shown in media and demanded immediate release of the detainees,” he said.BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Khandker Mahbub Hossain said irregularities and violence have made them disappointed. “Irregularities took place over 100 polling centres. We have handed over a list of the centres to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC). We have demanded re-election to the centres,” he said. Khandker Mahbub said they were in the Election Commission office the whole day when they have seen the Commission as helpless. BNP chairperson’s another adviser Osman Faruq said this municipality polls were held in January 5 elections style. “The ruling party used various techniques to manipulate the elections. We didn’t expect this type of election,” he said.Osman Faruq said the government is claiming that the election was held in a peaceful manner but we didn’t see peace.He said the people of the country know what was going on during the polls and they would judge whether it was a fair election or not.
