Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has slapped a restriction on all kinds of open space programmes in the city from 6:00pm of Thursday to 5:00am of Friday as part of the security measures during the 31st night celebrations.
Cox’s Bazar District Administration also imposed a bar on all open air events after sunset in the district, including the sea beach, for security reasons on the night.
The DMP also banned fireworks and outdoor parties in the capital city during the New Year’s Eve night.
The carrying of licensed firearms between 8:00pm and 5:00am has also been prohibited.
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia came up with the announcement at a press briefing at its media centre on Monday afternoon.
“We will take high security measures as per our capacity and if anyone tries to commit illegal and unrestrained acts, the law enforcers will bring that person to book,” the DMP Boss said.
Police said they will give utmost security to parties inside hotels, motels and restaurants. Even check posts will be set up in different areas of the capital.
Police will also conduct a three-day long drives from Monday as a measure to prevent crimes related to narcotics consumption and bursting of crackers on December 31 night, he said.
Bars will be closed from 6:00pm. Police and the Narcotics Control Division will jointly carry our drives from Monday in a bid to curb the use of narcotics in New Year parties.
Residents of Dhaka will not be able to enter Hatirjheel after 6:00pm and the Dhaka University campus will be off-limits for outsiders in the evening, said the DMP Commissioner.
“For the safety of the residents in Gulshan, Banani and TSC area, police will only allow the inhabitants to enter there at night,” he said.
Dhaka University will be under tight vigilance and only students and residents of the area will be allowed to enter through High Court-Doyel Chattar-Shaheed Minar-Palashi road from 6:00pm.
Vehicles of non-residents will not be allowed to enter the Dhaka University premises after 6:00pm and Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara after 8:00pm.
The Cox’s Bazar district administration took the decision to ban open air events at a meeting on Sunday to ensure tight security of local and foreign tourists.
Deputy Commissioner Md. Ali Hossain said that a three-day beach carnival has been arranged on the sea beach marking the Tourism Year- 2016. Besides, some programmes have also been arranged on the occasion of the 31st night. But events on the breach have to be wrapped up before the sunset due to the ban, he added.
