74 symbols to be used in poura polls

bdnews24.com :The Election Commission has kept 12 symbols for independent candidates of the Dec 30 municipal polls. The candidates of the 40 registered political parties will use their party symbols; this means there will be 52 symbols for mayor candidates.The symbols of the three major parties – Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party – are ‘boat’, ‘paddy sheaf’, and ‘plough’, respectively. The commission has kept 12 symbols for general councillor candidates and 10 for candidates of reserved councillor posts.So, the number of symbols to be used in the polls to 235 municipalities will be 74. EC officials said more symbols will be given if the number of candidates fighting for the three posts exceeds the number of symbols.According to them, 65 symbols have been kept for parliamentary elections.The number of symbols to be used in Upazila Parishad polls will be 86. It will be 74 in elections to city corporations, municipals and Union Parishads.The EC issued a circular on Wednesday about the distribution of symbols in the municipal polls.The deadline to submit nomination papers ends on Thursday. The commission will review the nominations on Dec 5 and 6.An aspirant will be able to appeal to the district level appeal authorities, if his or her nomination is turned down.The last day to withdraw nominations is Dec 13. Campaigns may be launched after the distribution of the symbols on Dec 14.Election Commissioner Md Zabed Ali said on Wednesday the commission will “treat the candidates in terms of their individual identities”. “Their parties and party symbols won’t be a factor,” Ali said.Until Wednesday, 22 parties, including Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party, said they were taking part in the election.Krishak Sramik Janata League in a statement said it is boycotting the municipal polls for amending the rules ‘without taking the party’s opinion and not deferring the polls’. The election to a local government body is going to be held on party lines for the first time though the Dec 30 polls.Only mayor candidates will be allowed to fight with nominations of political parties.The independent candidates will be required to have the support of at least 100 voters. This rule is not applicable for a former mayor.
