Our Bangladeshis cannot seek refugee status

THE New Nation published a tragic news item on its front page on Thursday that projected three Bangladeshi young men shouting among Syrian refugees for unlocking the Greece-Macedonian border to move towards northern Europe for political asylum or refugee shelter. They were literally crying for help and save their life as they left the country apparently to escape from fear of life in the prevailing political situation.
Staying in open air when the first spell of snow was showering making life intolerable, they were shouting to save them or shot them. They made the plea saying that they are Bangladeshis and not terrorists; which has become the biggest obstacle recently for Muslim migrants crossing to Europe. They want freedom the placard that they were carrying showed.
It was almost an unbelievable scene but question arises as to why young men from Bangladesh are braving the uncertainties of life to take shelter in Europe by swimming the seas and walking through muddy way to unknown European destinations.
Their cry for freedom puts the message to the world that they were unsafe in the country and ready to die while making way to freedom. Bangladeshi nationals were not usually seen in the crowds of refugees from the Middle East to Europe, but their presence in the European borders takes us back to our situation in Bangladesh as to whether many of our young people have also started to leave the country to save life and live in freedom.
It is a difficult time after the Paris tragedy when Muslim refugees in Europe prompt many to misconstrue them as terrorists. But why our boys are leaving the country and seeking refugee status in Europe is something that our government has to explain while others are seeking entry into Western country to flee war in their country.
We have unemployed young men who go abroad for jobs under government arrangement. They cannot be refugees. But the young ones seeking asylum abroad and trying to enter Western countries along with refugees from Syria and other countries have a different complexion. What they must be saying Bangladesh is not safe for them.
