JCD leader arrested in Jessore

Kotwali police arrested Nazmul Hossain Babul, general sectary, Jessore district unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of Bangladesh Nationalist Party early Tuesday.
Delwar Hossain Khokon, organizing secretary, Jessore district unit BNP told Newsmen that police arrested the JCD leader as part of the government’s repression on opposition party men. ‘The JCD leader was picked up from his Baliadanga based residence at dead night,’ he added. The police filed a case with Kotwali police station against the JCD leader with Kotwali police station.

Fisheries Depat starts releasing fish fry in Sylhet

The Fisheries Department has taken an initiative to release fish fry and spawn in the water bodies in Sylhet division. In a bid to increasing fish production in the region, it is being done under the programme named ‘Releasing Fish Fry in Open Water Bodies’, said the Sylhet divisional Deputy Director of the department Md Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan on Sunday. It would cost Tk 23.2 million including Tk 12.3 million for fries for 73 haors and water bodies while the rest Tk 10.9 million for spawn for the 153 beel and nurseries. The programme would help 251,027 fishermen in the four districts, Sylhet, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sunamganj. The district wise allocation includes, Sylhet Tk 5.1 million, Moulvivazar Tk 4.5 million, Habiganj Tk 4.2 million and Sunamganj Tk 9.4 million. “We have already released 2,012 kgs of spawn in the Lakhai upazila under Habiganj”, the official said, adding, fishermen have been asked not to catch fry for months. If they refrain from catching the fries for just for months, it would help raising the fish production during five to six months, the senior official said. However, a number of villagers at Ujanigaon of South Sunamganj upazila said government should ensure food help to the fishermen during the period.

Road mishap kills two in Sylhet

A Child and a young man was killed in a road accident held at in the district on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Adil 4, son of Abu Sofian of Manikhola area under Dakshin Surma upazila and Marzan 19, son of Anwrul Haque Sayedpur Village under Jogannathpur Upazila. The incident took place on Sylhet-Sunamgonj highway point of Teli bazaar area of the city at 10:00am while a Dhaka-bound Microbus hit CNG Outoriksha. Locals rescued him and rushed in to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where on duty doctors declared him dead. Following the incident, locals got furious and vandalized a Police Sergeant Motorbike. Shah Harunur Rahsid, Officer in charge Dakshin Surma Said Police Station, said that Two died as he was hit by the Microbus. An unexpected situation created at Telibazar area as the local people turned violent. “The situation is now under control,” OC also added.

Direct seeded rice farming can lessen pressure on groundwater

Agriculture specialist Prof Moshiur Rahman said large-scale promotion of direct seeded rice (DSR) farming can be the vital means of lessening the existing overrated pressure on groundwater in drought-prone Barind area.He added water scarcity, water loving nature of rice cultivation and increasing labour wages triggers the search for such alternative crop establishment methods which can increase water productivity. DSR is the only viable option to reduce the unproductive water flows, added Prof Rahman from Department of Agronomy of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh.
He said this while presenting his keynote paper at a scientific seminar at conference hall of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) here yesterday. BMDA hosted the seminar titled “Crop Intensification with less water through Dry Direct Seeded Boro Rice Based Cropping System”. Chairman of BMDA Dr Akram Hossain Chowdhury attended and addressed the seminar as chief guest with its Executive Director Engineer Abdur Rashid in the chair.
