Nur Arysha Hosein :

Two years ago today, my grandfather, Barrister Mainul Hosein, left this world. While it was one of the most devastating losses our family has ever faced, the strength of his legacy lives on and guides us even in his absence.

His entire life was defined by integrity, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law, and above all, Bangladesh.

Even when he was silenced through politically motivated imprisonment and restrictions on his own speech, he never abandoned the values he believed in.

His accomplishments remain a testament to the democratic ideals he fought for and the nation he tried to strengthen.

But beyond his remarkable achievements and remarkable determination for democracy, it is the person he was that is most inspirational and deeply remembered.

Throughout his life, my grandfather had a boundless heart, and his humanity was reflected in his actions, his words, and the values he embodied.

Personally, the thoughtful gifts he gave throughout my life were more than presents and were also his own unique way of expressing love.

They were always meaningful, chosen with care and intention, and they showed how deeply he valued giving while simultaneously reflecting the depth of his love and generosity.

He cherished even the smallest moments we shared, including the short routine visits I made to his usual spot each day after school.

He always appreciated my accomplishments, and he genuinely enjoyed and loved listening to me plays the piano with extensive gratitude.

There are countless memories I cherish, from the hours I spent with him at his chamber, watching his devotion to the law and his pride in his firm, to being at home and hearing the stories of his fascinating life.

Growing older has shown me just how much of him lives in me, and I wish every day that he were here to witness it.

One of those moments was reading 1984, a novel by George Orwell that happened to be his favourite.

Reading it now makes me understand him in new ways and reveals new similarities we share.

Moreover, I feel incredibly grateful to be his granddaughter. His unique and compelling legacy is one that continues to fascinate and inspire, and I remain forever thankful for the hardships and accomplishments he achieved and the strong moral compass he embodied.

From the remarkable contributions he made to the nation to the supportive, loving grandfather he was at home, he reminded me that the greatest legacies are those built both for a country and for a family.

I will carry your love, your lessons, and your light with me for the rest of my life.

Thank you, Dada, for everything.

Love Arysha
