MP Enamul amasses Tk 2000 crore

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) officials found evidence of huge illegal wealth accumulated by a ruling party lawmaker while conducting an investigation into the graft allegation against politicians, officials said.
A primary investigation carried out by the anti-graft body found that Enamul Haque, MP from Rajshahi-4 Constituency, earned wealth and properties worth Tk 2,000 crore which is visibly inconsistent with his known sources of income.
Enamul Haque MP, the owner of Ena Properties, also hides his wealth information when he provided tax to NBR during the fiscal year 2008-09 and 2012-13.  
Joton Kumar Roy, an investigation officer of the watchdog body, submitted a four-page report to the ACC on Thursday afternoon narrating the illegal wealth accumulation by the MP.
In order to run the smooth completion of the investigation, he also sought ACC’s approval for providing information of movable and immovable assets of MP Enamul.
Ena Properties have 17 real estate housing projects, including its office building. The market value of these properties is Tk 2,120.50 crore.
ACC’s primary investigation, however, did not find any legal source of income for operating such big housing projects. How he earned money and how he had funded such a big real estate company is the question. And to resolve the entire questions we need his complete wealth information, said an ACC official.
According to the investigation report, Enamul and his wife Tohura are holding 4:1 share of the Ena Properties.
It also found inconsistencies in the companies audit report when it submitted tax returns and took loans from the banks. He concealed Tk 31.89 crore worth of wealth during the submission of income tax in fiscal 2008-09.
In fiscal year 2012-13, he also suppressed wealth information of Tk 6.60 crore in his tax statement although he bought shares of Emarat Cold Storage in the name of his sons.
Earlier, on January 12, the ACC launched probes into the allegations of unusual wealth accumulation by seven politicians, including MP Enamul Haque, as their wealth had a “phenomenal” rise during the last five years.
The unusual wealth surge was inconsistent with their known sources of income as reported in local media after tallying their affidavits submitted before the last two elections in 2008 and 2014.
The graft watchdog has started investigation into their movable and immovable property in the first phase after media reports.
As per the affidavits of the candidates submitted to the EC for the last 10th parliamentary elections, the wealth of 48 candidates have increased by 363 per cent in the last five years, while that of the ministers by 247 percent and state ministers by 459 per cent.
