The government is working to extend a 20 percent electricity subsidy to the fisheries sector, similar to the incentive currently enjoyed by agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter said on Saturday.
“The fisheries sector does not yet receive subsidised electricity like agriculture. However, work has been underway for the past year, and through coordination among the relevant ministries, we expect to ensure around a 20 percent electricity subsidy very soon,” she said, reports UNB.
The adviser made the remarks while visiting the Faltita Fish Landing Centre in Fakirhat upazila of Bagerhat and exchanging views with depot owners.
Highlighting prospects for shrimp exports, Farida Akhter said Bangladesh’s shrimp is globally recognised for its taste and quality.
She, however, said international markets prioritise not only size and flavour but also health standards, environmentally sustainable production methods and strict compliance with antibiotic-free requirements.
“Shrimp producers and exporters must follow international standards and practices. Due to policy shortcomings of the previous government, the shrimp export sector has lagged behind. Existing disparities in exports will be addressed and effective measures will be taken swiftly,” she added.
Speaking on the broader fisheries sector, the adviser said Bangladesh has yet to fully reap benefits from the sector due to systemic gaps. As legal restrictions limit the collection of fish fry from natural sources, she stressed the need to increase the number of hatcheries to boost fry production.
Emphasising the importance of safeguarding exports, she called for stronger border surveillance, saying the illegal inflow of goods from neighbouring countries, including India, or from within the country is unacceptable.
“Such activities harm government revenue and prevent traders from operating on a level playing field,” Farida said.
Among those present at the meeting were Director General of the Department of Fisheries Md Abdur Rouf, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Abu Naim Muhammad Abdus Sabur, Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Golam Md Baten, District Fisheries Officer Raj Kumar Biswas, and other senior officials.
