Condemning the attacks on The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said the mob violence divided the nation clearly into two divisions.

“who carried out such violence are enemies of Bangladesh,” he said.
Condemning the attacks on the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said the incidents of mob violence have starkly divided the nation.

He said he strongly condemned the attacks on The Daily Star, Prothom Alo, and eminent journalists, including New Age Editor Nurul Kabir, adding that those responsible for such violence are enemies of Bangladesh.

“While the grief-stricken nation was praying for the soul of martyr Sharif Osman Hadi, shameful attacks were carried out on media organisations, including The Daily Star and Prothom Alo, as well as on respected journalist Nurul Kabir and others,” he said.

In a Facebook post early Friday, Fakhrul said Bangladesh is a sovereign and independent country, and it is the government’s responsibility to ensure the safety and security of every citizen.
He said those who exploit moments of national crisis for personal or political gain are enemies of the country. “They wait for such moments. Today, they turned a tragic situation into acts of destruction. I strongly condemn this terror,” he said.

The BNP leader noted that Hadi was a candidate in the upcoming national election and had gone to the people seeking their votes. “The election will be held, and a democratic government elected by the people will be formed in Bangladesh, InshaAllah,” he said.
He also demanded that the perpetrators behind Hadi’s killing be brought to justice and stressed that all acts of mob violence must be punished.
Fakhrul said the country has witnessed repeated incidents of mob violence over the past year, which have deeply divided the nation.
Following the fall of the autocratic Awami League regime, he said, the interim government’s foremost responsibility is to unite the people and build a democratic, stable, and inclusive society.
“We urge all political parties to act responsibly and remain united. The government must take immediate action,” he added.
Besides, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Friday described the arson and vandalism at the offices of The Daily Star and Prothom Alo as a “planned bid” to disrupt the upcoming national election.
Speaking to journalists at a views exchange meeting in Gulshan, the senior BNP leader said such acts of violence would not be able to halt the country’s democratic process.
He also faulted the interim government for failing to prevent the attacks, noting that security measures should have been strengthened at “previously identified sensitive locations.”
His comments came in the wake of a night of unprecedented violence that left the country’s two leading news organisations severely damaged.
According to reports, the attacks were sparked by news of the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot wounds on Thursday night.
