Meeting on “Waste Management Measures” held in Barishal

A town hall meeting titled “Waste Management Measures” was held in Barishal to present the current state of waste management in the city and discuss measures for its improvement.

The event took place on Thursday at the Euro Convention Hall, organized by LalSabuj Society with support from The Asia Foundation and funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). During the session, participants discussed the current situation of waste management across Barishal, its adverse effects, and necessary actions for improvement.

Representatives from various government institutions, the city corporation, environmental experts, academics, youth organizations, media personnel, political figures, and members of civil society attended the event.Notable attendees included AhsanHabib, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Barishal; MahbubAlam, Assistant Director of the Barishal City Corporation’s Sanitation Department; Abu Said Musa, District Chief Coordinator of the Central Party; Zia UddinSikdar, Member Secretary of Barishal Metropolitan BNP.

Professor Mohammad HossainDulal, Naib Amir of Barishal Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami; Rafiqul Islam Rasel, Central Organizational Secretary of GanadhikarParishad; and Dr. MizanurRahman, Member Secretary of Barishal Civil Society.

Speakers highlighted that rapid urbanization, consumer culture, and inefficient waste management have led to a significant increase in waste, posing serious concerns for the environment, public health, and climate. They emphasized the need for introducing waste segregation systems, promoting recycling, ensuring community participation, increasing city corporation staff and resources, and fostering joint initiatives between local authorities and citizens.

The organizers noted that sustainable waste management is possible through responsible citizen behavior, policy support, technology use, and awareness raising.

Recommendations raised during the town hall will be forwarded to relevant policymaking institutions.

The organizers, speakers, and attendees collectively agreed that adopting coordinated and proper management practices is essential to keeping the city clean. In addition to the speakers, teachers, local leaders, university students, city residents, and others attended the discussion and shared their opinions.
