Police have arrested Shah Jony, joint general secretary of the Tangail town unit of Jubo League, from the city’s brothel area in connection with a case filed over an anti-discrimination student movement. Shah Jony, son of Md. Israfil from Akur Takur Para in Tangail town, was detained based on a tip-off. He is accused in multiple cases related to the student movement, police sources said.
Tangail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanvir Ahmed confirmed the arrest and said, “He was arrested from the brothel area based on secret information. However, no remand has been sought for interrogation.”
Preparations were underway to produce him before the Tangail court on Monday afternoon. Earlier, on the night of October 2 last year, Shah Jony was also arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from the Baby Stand area in the town.
According to police, on August 4, 2024, around 11:00 am, armed attackers opened fire on student protesters during an anti-discrimination demonstration in the Bottola area of Tangail town. One protester, Lal Mia from Chinamura village in Kalihati upazila, sustained bullet injuries.
Following the incident, Lal Mia filed a case naming 230 individuals, including the president and general secretary of the district Awami League. Among the accused, 150 to 200 were unnamed. Shah Jony was listed as accused number 41 in the case.
