UNB, Dhaka: Jamaat-e-Islami has called a dawn-to-dusk countrywide hartal for Wednesday protesting the Supreme Court order upholding its leader Mir Quasem Ali’s death penalty. In a statement, Jamaat acting Secretary General Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the strike soon after the SC judgment on Tuesday. The hartal that will begin at 6am and end at 6pm is also meant for registering protest against the arrest of its top leaders and demanding the release of those arrested. Ambulance, fire-service and hospital vehicles, press and other emergency services will be out of the purview of the shutdown, said the statement. Earlier, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court rejected war criminal Mir Quasem Ali’s review petition against its previous verdict in favor of his death penalty awarded by the International Crimes Tribunal.
