In a landmark political development, President Mohammed Shahabuddin convened a crucial meeting at Bangabhaban, where leaders of various political parties and representatives from civil society, alongside the chiefs of the three military forces, gathered to address the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.
In the meeting, a decision was made to dissolve parliament and form an interim government to stabilize the country. The army has pledged to take necessary actions to restore order in the face of the prevailing anarchic situation.
This decision follows a significant announcement by Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman during a media briefing on Monday. He confirmed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned and that an interim government will soon be established to guide the nation through this turbulent period. This announcement was made after the army chief met with leaders of key political parties.
In his speech, General Waker-Uz-Zaman emphasized, “We had a constructive discussion where we have decided to form an interim government.” He highlighted that this new government would oversee all national activities and assured collaboration with the President to facilitate its formation.
Meanwhile, Md. Nahid Islam, coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, announced at a press conference in Tejgaon that a framework for the interim national government would be developed within the next 24 hours. He dedicated the movement to the “martyred students and people,” underscoring its commitment to justice and reform.
Call for Cooperation and Peace
General Waker-Uz-Zaman appealed to all parties and citizens to maintain peace and support the new governmental structure. “Please cooperate with me. Kindly refrain from any more vandalism, killings, and clashes,” he urged, stressing that progress depends on unity and peace.
He assured the public of the army’s commitment
to justice and safety, stating, “I am giving you my word, we will ensure justice for all killings and injustices. Keep faith in the army and armed forces. I am taking all responsibilities – safety of your life and properties.”
The meeting at the army headquarters included notable figures such as BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader, and other leaders from various political and religious groups, including Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Dhaka University Law Professor Dr. Asif Nazrul also participated, urging students to remain calm and hopeful for a peaceful resolution.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman reassured that if peace is restored, there would be no need for a curfew, and the army would continue its efforts to maintain peace and order. He expressed optimism that his address would improve the situation and foster a cooperative environment for transitioning to the interim government. In his concluding remarks, the army chief called for patience and collaboration: “Have patience. Give us some time. Together, we will be able to solve all the problems.” He acknowledged the substantial damage and loss of life, urging everyone to desist from further destruction and assist in restoring stability.
