Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed reiterated his commitment to upholding the rule of law in Bangladesh, emphasising that the judiciary is dedicated to safeguarding human rights in the country.
He made these remarks during a meeting with a three-member delegation, including Yao Wen, the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh, who paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Justice at his office in the Supreme Court (SC) this morning.
The Chief Justice assured the Chinese delegation of the full cooperation of Bangladesh’s Supreme Court in strengthening mutual relations between the judiciaries of both countries.
He specifically highlighted the role of the judiciary in post-revolutionary Bangladesh, particularly following the July-August uprising, which saw spontaneous participation from students and the public. He reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring the highest protection of human rights in the country.
Ambassador Yao Wen praised the Chief Justice for his recent initiatives aimed at strengthening the institutionalisation of Bangladesh’s judiciary. He expressed confidence that the strong leadership of Chief Justice Refaat Ahmed would play a crucial role in advancing good governance and ensuring justice in the future, a SC press release said.
The Ambassador also shared that China is eager to collaborate with Bangladesh to build a robust judiciary, with particular interest in organising special training programmes for judges from both nations to foster mutual interaction between their judicial systems. He extended an invitation for the Chief Justice of Bangladesh to visit China.
In addition, Ambassador Yao informed the Chief Justice that China has provided necessary medical equipment to aid in the treatment of those injured during the mass uprising in July and August. He also noted that China had assisted Bangladesh in addressing the recent flash floods that affected various regions of the country. The Ambassador expressed hope that these strong bilateral ties would continue to flourish in the future.
