Chaos erupted in the Baitul Mukarram, Paltan, and Bijoynagar areas after Jumma prayers on Friday, turning the area into a battlefield as police confronted members of the banned outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir. The clash ensued when the group attempted to bring out a procession from the south gate of Baitul Mukarram, defying warnings from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The Hizb ut-Tahrir members chanted slogans, including “The only path to liberation—Khilafah, Khilafah,” while marching. In response, law enforcers had to use sound grenades and teargas shells to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.
The group had previously announced a “March for Khilafah” at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram, and in preparation, they had put up posters at various locations, including Dhaka University, and distributed leaflets in different areas. Despite being banned, Hizb ut-Tahrir’s defiance of the police’s warnings led to this tense confrontation on Friday, reports UNB.
