Sharif Osman bin Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha and a prospective independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency, remains in an extremely critical condition after being shot by assailants, according to the medical board of Evercare Hospital overseeing his treatment.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, the multidisciplinary board led by Professor Dr Md Zafar Iqbal said Hadi has suffered severe brain damage.
As surgery has already been completed, his condition is now being managed conservatively with full life support and strict brain protection protocols. Doctors said his kidney function has improved, but his overall condition remains highly critical.
Hadi was transferred on Friday night from Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital following surgery.
The medical board said he also sustained lung injuries and continues to receive ventilator support, with close monitoring to prevent infection and acute respiratory distress.
A chest drain remains in place due to ongoing minor bleeding. Although earlier complications related to abnormal blood clotting have shown signs of improvement, continuous monitoring and blood transfusions are still required.
Doctors noted that an injury to the brain stem has caused fluctuations in blood pressure and heart rate. Medical teams are providing necessary support, and a temporary pacemaker will be used if his heart rate drops significantly.
The board further said that nothing can be said until 72-hour has passed.
Talking to journalists in front of Evercare Hospital, Dr Arif Mahmud
informed that the injury to Hadi’s brain was extremely severe.
“Though his heart is functioning, his brain condition is very poor. In such a situation, it is not possible to give any prognosis at this stage. The observation period may need to be extended if necessary,” he said.
The board expressed gratitude to doctors and support staff from DMCH, including teams from neurosurgery, anaesthesia, ICU, radiology and the One-Stop Crisis Centre, for their efforts in the initial phase of treatment.
The medical summary has been explained to Hadi’s family, who may share updates with the media if they wish.
The board has urged the public not to crowd the hospital, noting that no visitors are allowed, and requested restraint from spreading speculation or misinformation. It also called for respect for the patient’s privacy and dignity.
Sharif Osman bin Hadi was shot on Friday afternoon in the Kalvert area of Bijaynagar in the capital. Police said he was travelling in a rickshaw with another person when two men on a motorcycle opened fire and fled the scene.
He was taken to DMCH at around 2:35 pm before being shifted to Evercare Hospital later that night for advanced treatment.
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus reassured the family members of Hadi that the government would do its best to ensure the best possible medical treatment for him.
According to Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, Hadi’s elder brother Abu Bakar Siddiq and sister Masuma and Inquilab Mancha leaders Abdullah Al Jaber, Fatima Tasnim Juma and Md Borhan Uddin were present at the meeting with the Chief Adviser.
Recalling government’s measures to ensure best treatment, Yunus said, “The entire nation is praying for him. Everyone is trying to ensure the best treatment for him. Considering his physical condition, if he needs to be sent abroad for treatment, the government will arrange treatment wherever necessary.”
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan and National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman were also present.
