DU’s Jobaer Alam engages world leaders at Asian Forum

Professor Dr. Md. Jobaer Alam, a young academic from the University of Dhaka’s Department of Oceanography, has represented Bangladesh at prestigious international seminars and conferences, bringing recognition to the country’s marine science expertise and blue economy potential.

In a significant achievement, Mr. Alam joined at his very young age as an assistant professor at the Boao Forum for Asia—one of Asia’s most influential annual conferences, often described as the Asian equivalent of the World Economic Forum at Davos. His participation in this high-level gathering placed him among the global leaders, policymakers, and thought leaders shaping the continent’s economic and developmental agenda.

During the forum, he had the opportunity to engage with several prominent international figures, including the Chinese Foreign Secretary, a Saudi prince, the President of Kazakhstan, and former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke. These interactions provided valuable platforms for Professor Alam to discuss Bangladesh’s marine resources, oceanographic research, and the country’s blue economy development strategies with influential decision-makers. He mentioned that meeting Bob Hawke, the Australian prime minister, in person will always be memorable for him. The conversation they had about leadership and resilience had a lasting impact. It inspired him to approach his challenges with renewed determination and optimism.

Professor Alam’s international engagements extend far beyond a single forum. He has participated in numerous conferences across China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, the Maldives, the United Kingdom, and various other countries, presenting Bangladesh’s perspectives on marine science, sustainable aquaculture, and ocean governance. His research on seaweed cultivation, cage culture, and marine biodiversity has garnered attention in international academic circles, positioning him as a recognized voice in regional oceanographic discourse.

His contributions have not only enhanced the visibility of Bangladesh’s marine research but have also fostered collaborative initiatives with international institutions. As a result, Professor Alam is still encouraging a new generation of researchers committed to sustainable practices in marine science.

As an executive member of the International Centre for Ocean Governance since 2018, Professor Alam maintains active connections with the global ocean governance community. His membership in the Oceanographic Society of Bangladesh as an executive member since 2021 complements his international role with domestic leadership. Through these affiliations, he has been influential in shaping policies that address pressing oceanic challenges both locally and globally.

Currently a professor in the Department of Oceanography at Dhaka University—a position he attained in January 2024 after serving as department chairman for two consecutive terms—Professor Alam has published over 22 peer-reviewed articles in national and international journals. His research focuses on blue economy development, marine biodiversity, sustainable aquaculture, and oceanographic sciences.

Professor Alam’s growing international profile reflects Bangladesh’s increasing engagement with regional and global marine science communities. His ability to bridge academic research with policy discussions at high-level international forums positions him as an effective ambassador for Bangladesh’s scientific capabilities and maritime development aspirations.

Through his international participation, Professor Alam has not only elevated his own academic standing but has also brought visibility to Bangladesh’s emerging expertise in marine sciences and blue economy development, crucial areas for the nation’s economic future as it seeks to sustainably harness its vast marine resources in the Bay of Bengal.
