Locals are suffering while crossing the Karkhana River in Bakerganj upazila of Barishal district because in the winter season it becomes more as the water level of the river dries up .
Chairman of Kobai Union Parishad (UP) Zahirul Haque Badal Talukder said, people of two upazilas are suffering indescribably for this one bridge.
People of about 50 villages including Faridpur and Durgapasha Union under Bakerganj upazila of Barishal district and neighboring Baufal upazila of Patuakhali district are now living in misery.
They said at least 5,000 people have to travel by boat every day at Kheya Ghat of the Karkhana River in DC Road of Kabai Union under Bakerganj Upazila.
They have been demanding for decades for construction a bridge to cross the river, but did not get any benefit even after 53 years of independence.
Bakerganj Upazila LGED Engineer Abul Khair Mia admitted the need to construct the bridge and said, “We are trying to construct the bridge with allocation from JICA organization and LGED in the past. This effort still continues”.
