Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed Sunday told the parliament that Bangladesh deals trade with India under South Asian Preferential Trade Arrangement (SAPTA) and South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) due to no bilateral agreement between Bangladesh and India.
“Though the Free Tarde Agreement between Bangladesh and India is yet to be signed, but Bangladesh exports all products (except tobacco and tobacco related 25 products) to India tax free and quota free,” he said while replying to a question from independent lawmaker Hazi Mohammad Selim during the question and answer session in the House.
The minister said Bangladesh-India trade is being continued under SAPTA and SAFTA.
Tofail said the government is committed to provide exemplary punishment to frontier smugglers and law enforcement agencies are active to prevent smuggling at border areas.
Replying to another question from M Israfil Alam, the minister told the House that the government imported products at a cost of Taka 29,555 crore during the fiscal 2013-2014.
