NCP’s MP Mujahid survives highway crash

A microbus carrying Kurigram-2 lawmaker Atik Mujahid has been left mangled after being struck by a truck in a pre-dawn crash, with the MP narrowly escaping serious harm.

The accident occurred around 6:30am on Tuesday near the Kaunia Bailey Bridge on the Rangpur-Kurigram Highway, Kurigram Sadar Police chief Jahangir Alam said.

While Atik sustained what officials described as “minor” injuries, two others — driver Abul Kalam Azad, 40, and passenger Ikram Hossain, 25 — were critically hurt and rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, reports bdnews24.com.

Mujahid’s private officer Sazzad Hossain said, “The MP is at home and in good condition now. The two critically injured are undergoing treatment in Rangpur.”

He added, “The MP has said he is well and has sought prayers from everyone. He will seek medical care after iftar.”

Witnesses said the rented microbus, travelling from Dhaka, had reached Kaunia when a speeding truck from the opposite direction rammed into it from behind.

The impact sent the vehicle veering off the road into a roadside ditch, leaving it severely damaged.
Accounts from the scene suggest the truck careened from the direction of Kurigram at “reckless speed”, flouting traffic laws before veering out of control and crashing into the MP’s transport.

Rasheduzzaman Tawhid, joint convenor and media cell chief of the district’s National Citizen Party, said: “Unsafe roads and reckless driving have led to this.”

He urged the public not to spread rumours and to pray for the MP’s recovery.
