JU student suspended over cyberbullying
Jahangirnagar University (JU) has temporarily suspended a student named Golam Rabbani for allegedly using obscene language, cyberbullying, and threatening a female student on social media.
At the same time, the university administration has formed a five-member committee to conduct a full investigation into the incident.
The accused, Golam Rabbani, is a student of the 50th batch in the Department of Botany and a resident of Nawab Salimullah Hall. He manages a Facebook page called ‘Tuco The Ugly’.
On Thursday, the disciplinary action was taken by forming two separate office orders signed by Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman.
Our correspondent, Rabbani posted a video on his Facebook page about graffiti on a university wall without knowing the full context. Monisha Sarker, a student of the 51st batch in the Department of English, left a reasonable and measured comment on the video.
In response, Rabbani allegedly attacked her personally using highly obscene and abusive language.
Following the incident, on 11 March, the affected student filed a written complaint with the Proctor’s Office, stating that as a female student, such behaviour caused her mental distress and fear.
