Dr Shafique Opposition Leader, Dr Taher Dy Leader, Nahid Chief Whip

Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has been elected leader of the opposition in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad by the parliamentary party of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance.

Sources said Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party, will serve as the opposition chief whip.

The decisions were made at a parliamentary party meeting held on Tuesday afternoon, following the oath-taking of the alliance’s 77 MPs.

The 11-party alliance is expected to announce the appointments officially through a joint press release soon.

According to several alliance MPs, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher will serve as deputy leader of the opposition, while Rafiqul Islam Khan will take on the role of opposition whip.

The leader of the opposition will receive the same privileges and facilities as a minister, and the deputy leader of the opposition will be entitled to those of a state minister.
