Mayor calls for early local govt elections
Chattogram Bureau :
During an exchange of views with the European Union Election Observation Mission, Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain urged for early local government elections.
He said that development activities are being hampered due to the lack of elected public representatives at the local level and providing services to the city residents has become challenging.
The mayor said these things during an exchange of views with the European Union Election Observation Mission’s Long-Term Observer Susanne Grendel and Long-Term Observer Assistant Md. Masuk Haider at the CCC office in Tiger Pass on Sunday. When the delegation asked about the national elections, Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said, “There has been no fair election in the country since 2001.
As a result, the people did not get the opportunity to elect their representatives. Due to this, the country’s development and democracy have been greatly affected. In the recently held elections, BNP is going to form the government with a huge majority under the leadership of Tarique Rahman.
We are hopeful that just as martyred President Ziaur Rahman rescued the country’s economy after the war of liberation and Begum Khaleda Zia brought about the country’s economic transformation, Bangladesh will reach new heights of development under the leadership of Tarique Zia.”
The delegation said that the parliamentary elections were evaluated on the basis of Bangladesh’s national legal framework and the international and regional democratic election standards that the country has adopted.
The mission released its initial report in Dhaka on February 14 and organised a press conference. The report in this regard is being disseminated through the mission’s website and social media.
After the electoral process is completely completed, the mission will submit a detailed final report to the relevant stakeholders. This report will include necessary recommendations for the development of the future electoral system and it will also be published on the mission’s website.
