EC to use wireless network to collect results

Staff Reporter :

The Election Commission (EC) will use modern law enforcement wireless and network systems to collect results from 108 remote polling centres in the hill districts of Rangamati, Khagrachhari, and Bandarban in election.
To this end, the commission on Wednesday sent letters to the returning officers of the three districts, asking them to take necessary measures.

Under the plan, results will be collected from 20 centres in Rangamati, 46 in Bandarban, and 42 in Khagrachhari, bringing the total to 108 remote polling centres.

According to the latest EC data, there are 42,779 polling centres across the country, with 247,482 booths. On average, one polling centre has been set for every 3,000 voters.

The commission said 785,225 officials will be deployed to conduct the election, including 42,779 presiding officers, 247,482 assistant presiding officers, and 494,964 polling officers.

EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that due to holding both the parliamentary election and referendum on the same day, the number of booths and centres has increased, and ballot counting may take longer than usual.
Bangladesh currently has 127,711,739 registered voters, including 64,825,361 men, 62,885,200 women, and 1,232 transgender voters.

Meanwhile, ahead of the election, nearly 350 complaints have been submitted to the Election Commission, officials said on Thursday.

Mohammad Saiful Islam, member secretary of the central coordination committee for the election and director (operations) of the NID wing, disclosed the information on 5 February.

According to EC sources, 144 complaints were filed against election officials, while 201 complaints involved violations of the electoral code of conduct and other issues, bringing the total to 344 complaints.

The report also said that from 8 January to 4 February, executive magistrates assigned to the election filed 212 cases over code-of-conduct violations and related matters, collecting Tk 2,298,750 in fines.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Inquiry and Adjudication Committee concluded summary trials in 15 cases, imposing fines totaling Tk 105,500.

The EC said enforcement actions will continue until polling day.
