PROTESTS ERUPT: ICE shooting kills woman in Minneapolis, USA

Agencies :

A federal officer with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has fatally shot a woman during the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown on a major United States city, officials have said, prompting protests, school closures and calls to resist immigration enforcers.

Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot in the head in front of a family member on Wednesday morning while behind the wheel of her SUV in a snowy residential neighbourhood south of downtown Minneapolis, reports Al Jazeera.

Federal authorities said the officer fired in self-defence, claiming the woman’s vehicle posed an immediate threat to agents. The Department of Homeland Security described the shooting as occurring during a lawful enforcement action.

Local officials disputed that account, saying preliminary video footage and eyewitness reports raise serious doubts about whether the officer faced an imminent danger.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the incident “deeply disturbing” and demanded full disclosure from federal authorities.

The killing prompted demonstrations across the city, with protesters calling for accountability and an end to ICE operations in residential areas. Civil rights organisations said the shooting reflects growing tensions between federal immigration enforcement and local communities.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has opened an investigation alongside state authorities. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, officials said.

Family members of the victim said she was unarmed and attempting to leave when shots were fired. Lawyers for the family indicated legal action may follow.

Further details are expected as the investigation continues.
