Driver sued for Noakhali road crash

A case has been filed against the driver of a microbus that plunged into a canal in Begumganj, Noakhali, killing seven members of a same family in a tragic road accident earlier this week.
Abdur Rahim, father of Oman expatriate Md Bahar Uddin, lodged the case late Thursday night with Begumganj Police Station, naming driver Enayet Hossain Akbar as the accused. The driver is alleged to have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the fatal crash.
Officer-in-charge of the local police station Md Liton Dewan confirmed the filing and said the case will be transferred to Chandraganj Highway Police Station in Lakshmipur district for further legal proceedings.
Police have identified the driver as Enayet, son of the late Foyez Ahmed from Patwarbari in Charchamita, Hajirpara union, Lakshmipur Sadar upazila. He has been on the run since the incident.
The accident occurred on 6 August as the victims were returning home after welcoming Bahar Uddin from Dhaka. The microbus veered off the Lakshmipur-Chowmuhani road and plunged into a canal at Begumganj, near the Lakshmipur district border.
The deceased have been named as Bahar’s mother Mursheda Begum (50), wife Kabita (25), two-year-old daughter, nieces Reshmi (9) and Lamia Akter (8), younger brother’s wife Laboni (25), and grandmother Foyjun Nesa (70) – all residents of Chowpolli in North Joypur union.
Bahar himself survived, along with his father Abdur Rahim, father-in-law Iskandar Mia, sister-in-law Sweety Akter, and brother-in-law Riaz Hossain. The survivors have accused the driver’s drowsiness of causing the accident.
Authorities are continuing efforts to locate and apprehend the accused driver.
