Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher on Sunday said the proposed appointment committee for constitutional and statutory bodies would not curtail the Prime Minister’s authority in any way.

“This committee won’t interfere with the Prime Minister’s power. Rather, it will ensure balance within the system,” Taher told reporters during a break in the ongoing dialogue with the National Consensus Commission.

His remarks appeared to counter BNP’s objection to the proposed committee.

The seventh day of second-round talks between the Commission and political parties began at 11 am at the Foreign Service Academy, chaired by Commission Vice Chairman Professor Ali Riaz.

Explaining the structure of the proposed committee, Taher said it would include the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker of Parliament, a representative from the judiciary, and a nominee of the President — ensuring participation from both the government and opposition.

He noted that two-thirds of political parties had already agreed to the proposed composition, with only minor issues remaining. “This structure will help appoint qualified, neutral, and competent individuals in key positions across the administration, secretariat, and parliament,” he said.

Taher also stressed that Jamaat will not accept any election without meaningful reforms. “Without reforms, we risk further criminalisation of politics, and voter apathy will deepen,” he warned.

On the issue of a proposed bicameral legislature, he said Jamaat supports the idea in principle but insisted both chambers must reflect the people’s vote. “The Upper House should not be formed solely by MPs’ votes,” he said.

He expressed hope that all political parties could unite through a neutral process to reach national consensus.
