Bangladesh has called on European Union member states to expedite the formal recognition of Palestine, emphasizing that such a move is essential for legitimizing and empowering Palestinian sovereignty and self-determination. The appeal was made during a high-level meeting of the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution in Brussels.
A Bangladeshi delegation, led by Md. Shafiqur Rahman, Director General (West Asia) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated in the meeting, which focused on mobilizing international efforts for a just and lasting resolution to the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
In his address, Rahman reiterated Bangladesh’s unwavering support for the establishment of two sovereign states based on pre-1967 borders. He commended the Global Alliance’s efforts to find practical solutions encompassing political, security, and accountability measures.
Rahman also urged the global community to exert pressure on Israel to halt illegal settlement activities and fulfill its obligations under the Oslo Accords. He stressed the importance of collective action, calling on international actors to deploy all available diplomatic tools to advance the peace process.
The delegation specifically urged EU member states to use their influence to prevent vetoes by Permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council that might obstruct a permanent ceasefire in the ongoing Gaza war or derail peace initiatives. Bangladesh also encouraged the EU to leverage its diplomatic clout in pushing for a multilateral resolution to the conflict.
Solidarity with Palestine
Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the country’s steadfast commitment to the principles of justice, equity, and international law. It emphasized Bangladesh’s enduring solidarity with the Palestinian people and reiterated its support for a two-state solution as the foundation of peace in the Middle East.
“Bangladesh remains resolute in advocating for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and calls on the global community to act decisively in fostering a peaceful resolution,” the statement said.
Global Push for Peace
The Brussels meeting brought together diplomats, policymakers, and international organizations to chart a pathway toward ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Bangladesh’s active participation underscored its dedication to advocating for global justice and stability in the region.
The appeal to the EU and the broader international community marks another step in Bangladesh’s consistent efforts to support Palestine and promote lasting peace in the Middle East.
