Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed has issued a directive to ensure heightened security measures for courts across Bangladesh, including the Supreme Court, judges’ chambers, their residences, and lawyers.

Supreme Court’s Public Relations Officer Md. Shafiqul Islam confirmed the development on Friday, emphasizing the chief justice’s concern over recent incidents at the Supreme Court premises and unfavorable situations in district courts.

In a statement signed by Supreme Court Registrar General Dr. Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan, it was highlighted that the judiciary, as a critical pillar of the state, is essential for upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice. The chief justice underscored the need to protect judicial premises, personnel, and related infrastructure to maintain the courts’ dignity.

The statement noted that previous instructions were issued to secure court premises, tribunal areas, judges’ residences and vehicles, and judicial staff. Local law enforcement agencies were also called upon to assist in these efforts.

The chief justice’s latest directive follows what were described as “unprecedented and undesirable incidents” at the Supreme Court and disturbances in district courts nationwide.

Authorities have been instructed to act immediately to implement security measures, reflecting the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining a secure environment for legal proceedings and judicial personnel.

The directive is seen as a critical step to uphold the integrity of the judiciary amidst growing concerns over safety and disruptions in court operations.
