The foot over bridge escalator in a busy area of Dhaka has been out of service for the last 13 days, causing significant hardship for vulnerable groups, including women, children, the elderly, and individuals with health conditions.
The abrupt shutdown of the escalator, without any prior notice or explanation from the authorities, has left many commuters struggling to navigate the stairs, intensifying their daily challenges.
Residents and frequent commuters have voiced their frustration, highlighting the severe inconvenience caused by the escalator’s extended downtime.
“It is extremely difficult for elderly people and children to climb the stairs,” said one local resident, adding that those with mobility issues or illnesses are facing immense pain in the absence of the escalator.
Despite numerous complaints, no official statement or notice has been issued regarding the shutdown, leaving many questioning the lack of communication from the responsible authorities. The escalator, which is a critical infrastructure component for those with mobility challenges, was previously regarded as a lifeline for many commuters who depend on it to cross busy roads safely.
Reports suggest that the escalator is no longer facing technical problems, and its continued shutdown is raising alarm bells among citizens. The issue has not only caused physical distress to the affected groups but also sparked concerns about public safety.
In response to the growing public outcry, Mir Khairul Alam, Joint Secretary of Dhaka North City Corporation, spoke to the media. While expressing a lack of awareness about the situation, he assured the public that he would investigate the matter and take immediate action to address the issue.
“I was unaware of the problem, but I understand how significant this issue is for the people. I will ensure that action is taken and the escalator is restored as soon as possible,” Alam stated.
However, despite his assurances, the lack of official notification and the ongoing disruption continue to raise doubts about the efficiency and communication of the concerned authorities.
Citizens are calling on the Dhaka North City Corporation to expedite the repair process and notify the public about the reasons for the escalator’s shutdown.
