A 460-bed cancer, kidney and heart disease treatment center to be started functioning in Barishal soon.
If this medical center is opened, the suffering of hundreds of thousands of people in the southern region will be reduced.
Although the construction work for that hospital completed this year, but the contractor could not handover that due to the financial allocation crisis and the ongoing situation of the country.
However, they said to finish the construction work in June next year.
Faisal Alam, executive engineer of Barishal Public Works Department, said the project could not be implemented within the stipulated time due to non-allocation of fundsfor the payment of bills.
However, the building will be handed over after completion of the construction work soon, the PWD sources added.
At present BarishalSher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital is the only reliable place for treatment of people in the southern region.
But there was no special arrangement for cancer, kidney and heart disease treatment in this institution.
As a result, the patients had to run to the capital Dhaka or abroad.
However, as this treatment is very expensive, many died without treatment.
Later, to breathe a sigh of relief in the medical sector of the people of this region, an initiative was taken to establish a new 460-bed cancer, kidney and heart treatment center.
In that continuation, the Public Works Department started working for construction of that specialized hospital in August 2021 under the Ministry of Health and Family Planning.
Right in front of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, construction work has started on about 3 acres of land to set up cancer, kidney and heart treatment centers.
Initially, the cost of this project was estimated at 175 crore taka, but later it increased to 239 crore taka.
Mizanur Rahman Khan, owner of the construction company Khan Builders said, this hospitalwould be the first 17-storey government building, which would be the tallest building in the southern region.
This building will have all the medical facilities like in the developed world.
There will be escalators, different lifts, central AC, fire lift and own substation for patients, relatives and doctors.
He also said that the work could not be completed within the stipulated time due to the funding crisis and the ongoing situation in the country.
In this regardMosharraf Hossain, the manager of Popular Diagnostic Center Barishal, saidthat at least three lakh people are affected and more than 100,000 people die by cancer in the country every year.
